Planning to buy a laptop? Before deciding which laptop are you buying, it is important to identify what type of laptop user are you first. The laptop that you’d buy should depend primarily on the purpose for which you will use it.

Are you a laptop home user? Are you a traveler and will you carry your laptop everywhere you go? Or are you an extreme gamer who would use a laptop for games? Know first what type of laptop user are you before finally choosing which laptop to buy!

Below are the various types of laptop users that might help you determine your purpose and eventually the brand and model of laptop you’re going to buy:

Home User

Laptop home users practically use their laptop for everything fun and personal – from surfing the Internet to paying the bills to browsing for pictures to watching movies to listening to music. Some would even use it to send out personal emails, chat with friends, and update online accounts especially if their office computers do not allow them.

If you are a laptop home user and will basically use your laptop for entertainment and personal goals only at home, then you would need a versatile laptop designed with a reasonably fast processor, lots of hard drive space, and a right amount of RAM. If you will be using your home laptop for a few games, as well, try to choose one with an Nvidia or ATI graphics card.

Gamer

Speaking of games, if you will be using your new laptop for gaming, make sure that it is a powerful one. The most important consideration is its graphics card; choose one that could handle the flexibility, color, and movements of your game.

Gaming laptops often come in 15- or 17-inch screens, not only because images are nice to look at with a larger size, but because they generate an ample amount of heat, more importantly. Also, since they are supposed to be use continuously by gamers, their batteries tend to drain fast. Gaming laptops are quite expensive, as well.

Student

Laptops for students are generally designed for simple web browsing and word processing only. They often come in moderate-speed processors and little memory. Their sizes are also a little smaller than the typical laptops. Often called netbook, student laptops come in size ranging from 6 to 10 inches and weight ranging from 1 to 2 kilos only, perfect for portability.

If you are a student and will not use your laptop other than keeping school files and researching on the web, then it is best to choose from the wide variety of netbooks available in the market.

Traveler

If you are not a student but portability is of utmost importance to you, then look for ultraportable laptops. Ultraportable laptops are designed slim, sleek, and lightweight, making them very easy to carry around wherever you go. What defines laptops of this type are size and weight; they often come in screens measuring 13.3 inches or less and weight measuring 1.8 kilos or less.

Be aware, though, that ultraportable laptops that are best for travelers are not as great as the other laptops type. Their small internal space can not accommodate the powerful specifications that the latter are designed with. Also, they have very limited cooling options. If you travel a lot, however, then the tradeoff will most likely be worth it!

Businessman

Business laptops are often created durable and for long-term use. They also have large memory and fair processor. However, they are not as powerful as those of for gaming that come with high-quality graphics card, as the former is expected to be used for simple office tasks only such as sending emails, editing spreadsheets, and browsing the Internet. Business or office laptops come in a wide variety of brands and models, ranging from cheap, low-end types to expensive, powerful models.

Remember that when buying a laptop from the Apple store or other computer shops, it is not always about the specs, the size, or the outside appearance; more importantly, you should also consider the purpose in which you are supposed to use your new laptop!
